why did German government expect a fair treaty (4)
1 The Kaiser who led them into war had gone
2 Germany had a new democratic constitution and new leaders
3 The new government needed all the help it could get to stabilise Germany and prevent a communist revolution
4 Wilson was the most powerful of the leaders and he wanted a fair treaty - Germany expected the treaty to be based on the 14 points

how did Germany react
they were appalled and complained it was to harsh but ignored that they had imposed much harsher settlement on Russia in a 1918 treaty
why and when di Germany sign
they had to sign without negotiation or face more attacks. They signed in humiliating circumstances in June 1919 in Versailles
What were the impacts on land and population on the treaty (5)
1 Germany lost 10% of its land
2 12.5% of its population
3 16% of its coalfields
4 half of steel and iron industry
5 overseas colonies were ruled by mainly Britain and France on behalf of the league of nations
What limits were put on Germany’s armed forces (5)
army limited to 100,000 troops
soldiers had to volunteer - no conscription
Germany not allowed tanks, submarines or military aircraft
navy could only have 6 battleships
Germany not allowed to have troops in Rhineland
Why were Germany told to pay reparations
The war guild blamed Germany for starting the war and the damage it caused- Germans disagreed
Because of their guilt they agreed to pay reparations
These were fixed at 6.6 billion - finished paying in 1984
