1 Promised to restore Germanys greatness
2 promised to put right what he said was wrong with treaty of Versailles - Germany no longer paying reparation, lost land and limitation on armed forces
3 promised to expand Germany’s territories to the east and provide more living space for what he saw as Germans master race - bringing German minorities living in other countries back to Germany
4 began to emphasise his hatred for Jews and their power in Germany - owning businesses and banks
5 He believed communism was evil and that USSR wanted to invade Germany as part of policy for world domination so defeating USSR was a priority
What did Hitler do as soon as he came to power to build up Germany’s military strength
1 1933 began rearming Germany in secret, ignoring terms of the treaty
2 from March 1935 he openly started policy of conscription
3 He held huge ralies in Germany to show off his power to Europe and withdrew Germany from League of Nations
4 He announced in 1935 he had an army of 550,000 more than 5x what he was allowed

what was the result of Hitler’s foreign policy
it increased German influence without much resistance
what happened in 1934 when Hitler tried to take over Austria
violence broke out in Austria and Chancellor Dollfuss was killed.
Hitler wanted to invade but Mussolini wanted to establish friendship with Austria and Hitler didn’t want to lose his support

1 Hitler reunited Saar with Germany - over 90% of the people voted this is what they wanted as they had been under the league for 15 years
2 Britain France and Italy signed an agreement to stop Germany acting against the treaty but it had little effect and they compromised with Germany over the navy rather than fighting
3 Mussolini invaded Abyssinia
