1 a fair settlement based on 14 points that would allow the development of a peaceful world
2 He wanted to be fair towards Germany to keep peace in Europe

why was wilson seen as a idealist
saw hope for the future and ignored some of the harsh realities of the time

He wanted a harsh treaty to weaken Germany and to punish Germany- his views reflected French public opinion

2 He wanted to punish Germany but not so it would cause revenge
