Aims of palliative care
provides relief from pain + other distressing symptoms
affirms life and regards dying normal process
intends neither hasten nor postpone death
integrates psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care
offers a support system to help pt live as actively as possible until death
offers a support system to help family cope during patients illness and in their own bereavement
uses team approach address needs of patients and their families - including bereavement counselling, if indicated
will enhance QOL and may also positively influence course of illness
applicable early in course of illness - in conjunction with other therapies that are intended to prolong life such as CT, RT and includes those investigations needed
Palliative care for children
active total care of the child’s body, mind and spirit and also involves giving support to the family
Treat pain
mild pain - acetaminophen or NSAID
moderate-severe pain - NSAID, acetaminophen, morphine

Non pharmacological pain management
distraction - bubbles
muscle relaxation
guided imagery - focusing on pleasant activity “safe place”
hypnosis
Good death?
adequate pain and symptom management
avoiding inappropriate prolongation of dying
a sense of control
strengthening relationships with loved ones
