P2 (10) 20. Practice Structures Flashcards
what are the four practice structures?
fixed practice
variable practice
massed practice
distributed practice
what is fixed practice?
examples?
repeatedly practicing a whole skill within a training session
train someone to perform a closed skill more consistently
introduce someone to a new skill for the first time
putting golf
serving in tennis
goal kicking in rugby
penalty kick in football
what is variable practice?
example?
a training session that includes frequent changes in task so that the skill can be repeated in different situations
used for open skills- unpredictable and changeable conditions
conditioned games like 3 vs 2. 5 passes before scoring etc
more like game situation
shooting in football
repetition of a skill
what is massed practice?
example?
practice that occurs without breaks between trials (attempts)
long periods of practice without rest where the skill is repeatedly continued
simple skills that require low concentration
rally in badminton for specific drop shots
why is massed practice good for experienced performers?
allows them to create consistency in a specific area
get used to performer the skill when tired
leads to better performance towards the end of a match or game
what is distributed practice?
example?
intervals between skills practiced in a training sessions for rest or mental rehearsal
used for dangerous or fatiguing skills
allows time for feedback
swimming 25m, in a stroke, then returning for feedback
when is distributed practice best?
for learning a new skill, to allow time for feedback on performance
less motivated athletes, providing rest and feedback and praise
complex skills, requiring high concentration
give an example for:
fixed practice
variable practice
massed practice
distributed practice
in netball
shooting in netball
3 vs 2 in netball, from centre to net
chest pass for 5 minutes
defence with progressions
