P1 21. The short term effects of exercise on the muscular system Flashcards
what is lactic acid
a by product formed when the body is exercising anaerobically at a high intensity
what is muscle fatigue
a reduction in the ability of a muscle to produce force
what is lactate accumulation
lactic acid builds up resulting in muscle fatigue
what happens when muscles work aerobically
lactic acid production will be low
what happens if an activity involves anaerobic respiration
lactic acid will accumulate quickly
what is oxygen debt
a temporary oxygen shortage in the body arising from exercising
the heart rate stays high so that oxygen can be repaid to working muscles
why does oxygen debt occur
created when muscles work aerobically
your cardiovascular and respiratory system continue to work hard to repay the debt and replenish our muscles with oxygen
respiratory and cardiac values stay high
blood continues to be directed to working muscles
values return to resting levels when the body slowly recovers
