P1 19. The short term effects of exercise on the respiratory system Flashcards
what is tidal volume
the amount of air inhaled per breath
measured in millimetres
depth of your breathing
around 500ml
TV
what is frequency
the number of breaths taken per minute
rate of breathing
around 12 to 20 breaths
f
what is minute ventilation
the amount of air inhaled and exhaled in one minute
measured in litres
VE
what is vital capacity
the maximum amount of air exhaled following a maximum inhalation
what is the minute ventilation equation
Tidal Volume x Frequency = Minute ventilation
TV x f = VE
what are the short term effects of exercise on the respiratory system
you’re lungs and working muscles require more oxygen
you have to inhale more air
frequency of breathing and TV increase
more oxygen to diffuse into blood stream to circulate the blood stream
increase in CO2 made, needs to be exhaled
increased frequency and TV allows this to happen
what happens when resting
frequency is relatively low at around 12-15 breaths per min
tidal volume is relatively low at 500ml
what happens during exercise
TV increases to bring more air into lungs per breath
frequency increases as air is inhaled and exhaled quicker
