P1 20. The short term effects of exercise on the vascular system Flashcards
what is vascular shunting
the redistribution of blood flow
where blood is directed away from inactive areas to active areas
how is vascular shunting done?
through vasodilation and vasoconstriction
what is vasodilation
the widening of the internal diameter (lumen) of the arteries supplying oxygen to the working muscles
increase the volume of blood travelling through
arteries dilate during exercise so more blood goes to active working muscles
increases oxygen supply and removal of waste substances
what is vasoconstriction
the narrowing of the internal diameter (lumen) of the arteries supplying oxygenated blood to inactive muscles
restrict the volume of blood travelling through
arteries constrict during exercise so less blood goes to inactive areas
what happens when we are resting
a high proportion of blood is directed to organs
what happens when we exercise
blood directed towards the voluntary and working muscles
away from the digestive system to supply quads and hams
ensures voluntary muscles work aerobically which is the most efficient way to exercise
