Onset: immediate Iv, 3-7 min IM

Duration:1 hour IV, 2-3 hrs IM

Post-partum hemorrhage

Contraindications
Baby and placenta not delivered, additional fetus present

Side effects
- hypotension
- tachycardia
- dysrhythmias
- seizure
- coma
- n+v
If given prior to fetal delivery; fetal hypoxia, asphyxia, intra cranial pressure

Dose
Adult: 3-30 units IM
Adult: 10-20 units in 500 ml or 1000 ml d5w,NS, or LR- slow IV,IO infusion

Precaution
Can cause over stimulation of uterus, possible uterine rupture
Monitor vitals and uterine tone

Htn when given with vasoconstrictors such as NE
