Drug Classification:
- Platelet aggregation inhibitor
- Anti-inflammatory
- Salicylate
ASPIRIN, ACETYLSALICYLIC ACID, ASA (Bayer®)
Mechanism of Action:
- Inhibits platelet aggregation by blocking the formation of Thromboxane A2 ⇒ Thromboxane A2 causes platelet aggregation and arterial constriction
- COX inhibitor ⇒ inhibits prostaglandin synthesis and reduces spread of
inflammation

Pharmacokinetics
Onset of Action = 5-30 minutes
Peak Effects = 15-120 minutes
Duration of Effect = 1-4 hours
Half-Life = 15-20 minutes

Indications/Field Use:
New chest pain suggestive of AMI/ACS
ASPIRIN, ACETYLSALICYLIC ACID, ASA (Bayer®)
Contraindications:
Patient with history of hypersensitivity to this drug, relatively contraindicated w/ active ulcer disease and asthma

Side Effects/Adverse Reactions:
- GI bleeding
- wheezing
- N+V
- heartburn
- prolonged bleeding

ADULT DOSE:
(ADULT) 160-325mg PO
81mg Baby ASA preferred b/c can be chewed/swallowed

PEDI DOSE:
Not recommended for Pediatric Patients

Precautions:
- Can cause GI upset/bleeding; use enteric coated pills w/ Pt.’s w/ GI Hx
- giving doses higher than recommended can interfere with possible benefits

Drug-Drug Interactions:
- ASA + other anti-inflammatory agents ⇒ increased side effects
- ASA + antacid ⇒ decreased blood levels of drug b/c decreased absorption
