Mechanism of Action:
Opiate R agonist ⇒ CNS depression, induces analgesia and sedation, increases peripheral venous capacitance and decreases venous return, decreases myocardial oxygen demand
MORPHINE SULFATE
Pharmacokinetics
Onset of Action = Immediate IV, 15-30 minutes IM
Peak Effects = 20 minutes IV, 30-60 minutes IM
Duration of Effect = 2-7 hours
Half-Life = 1-7 hours
MORPHINE SULFATE
Indications/Field Use:
- Severe pain/anxiety associated with MI, kidney stones, burns
- Pulmonary edema
MORPHINE SULFATE
Contraindications:
- Hypovolemia or hypotension
- Undiagnosed head injury / AMS
- Hypersensitivity to morphine, codeine, percodan
- COPD/compromised respiratory status

Side Effects/Adverse Reactions:
- N+V
- HA
- abd cramps
- blurred vision
- constricted pupils
- AMS
- respiratory depression
MORPHINE SULFATE
ADULT DOSE:
(ADULT): 2-10mg IV initial, then 2mg every few min until relief of pain

PEDI DOSE:
PEDI: 0.1mg/kg slow IVP (IO)
MORPHINE SULFATE
Precautions:
Causes respiratory depression in high doses, have Narcan available
MORPHINE SULFATE
Drug-Drug Interactions:
Additive effects (CNS depression) when given with:
- antihistamines
- antiemetics
- sedatives
- hypnotics
- barbiturates
- alcohol
