This deck is designed to assist you in understanding a brief outline of the events of the Old Testament.
What does the Book of Genesis begin with?
God creating the world and man, then man committing the first sen and its effects to the future generation and to the world
Because evil and good escalate in the Early World, what did God do?
Send interventions to restore goodness
What did God promise Abraham? Why?
A land called Canaan, the Promised Land, and later on Israel and many descendants (the Israelites);
As a reward for his faithfulness to Him
Who was Abraham’s son?
Isaac
God tested Abraham by telling him to sacrifice his son on a mountain. What did God do in return for Abraham’s show of great faith?
He did not allow him to sacrifice his son and provided a ram instead
Who is the son of Isaac?
Jacob
In what place/location did Jacob wrestle with an angel and prevail?
Jabbok
Where was Jacob born?
Canaan
What does Israel mean?
It’s Hebrew for “wrestled with God.”
How many sons did Jacob have, and what is their significance?
12 sons (and one daughter); The tribes of the nation Israel were later named after Jacob's sons
Who is Joseph?
One of the sons of Jacob
How did Joseph wind up in Egpyt?
His brothers sold him into slavery out of jealousy (they were forced to work the fields while Joseph was taught to read, write, and calculate)
What does Joseph do in Egypt?
Save Egypt from famine and become a trusted assistant of a pharaoh
Why did Jacob and his sons leave Canaan to go to Egypt?
Because of famine
What did the Egyptians do in response to feeling threatened by the growing population of the Hebrews?
They enslaved them and killed their infants
What was the purpose of the name “Hebrew”?
To distinguish the Israelites from the Egyptians
Who did God call upon to the liberator of his people from slavery in Egypt? How did God do this?
Moses;
God achieved this by talking to Moses through a burning bush in Mt. Sinai
How did Moses prove himself to be the liberator send by God to the Egyptians and Hebrews?
Through the plagues
How long did the Hebrews wander in the desert after the Pharaoh set them free?
40 years
Why did the Hebrews have to wander for 40 years in the desert?
To be cleaned of those who did not truly believe in God
What was an important event that occurred in the desert?
God gave Moses the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai
Who leads the Israelites into Canaan and begins conquering the land after Moses’ death?
Joshua
When Canaan/Israel is possessed again by the descendants of Abraham, who do the people initially think of as their king?
God
Who leads Canaan/Israel initially?
By judges who settled disputes and saved Israel from pagan conquerers
