Faith in the Church Part Four Flashcards
This deck will aid you in understanding why the Church serves such a pivtoal role in Salvation history.
Do we need to want to be forgiven in order to be forgiven?
No, we don’t need to. In fact, forgiveness is already offered to us through Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross.
In what way does the Chruch serve as a deposit and channel of salvific truth?
It complies, preserves, and proclaims the Scriptures, which contain within them truths regarding Christ’s existence and life (which is relevant in our Salvation history because it is through Christ’s death that we share in the gift of Salvation).
In what way does the Chruch serve as a deposit and channel for salvific grace?
The Church does this through the administration of the Sacraments, each of which provide us a grace of sorts. For instance, in Baptism, we receive the supernatural help needed to combat sin as we are washed away of Original Sin.
Describe St.Paul.
Was a first-century Israelite and Roman citizen; became Christian and was a convert; uses his citizenship to preach of God through Rome; wrote to the cities he visited, such as the Corinthians (hence the Letters to the Corinthians)
Describe the Book of Hosea.
Was written by Hosea, an Israelite; he loved in the 8th century, when Israel was conquered and split into two; in 722, the Assyrians took over, and since they were pagan, Hosea became surrounded by polytheistic peoples, but he continued to remain true to the faith
Describe the Book of Hosea Part Two.
When he became of age, Hosea asked God who he should marry, and God directed him to Gomer, a known prostitute; reluctant but adhering to God’s will, Hosea married Gomer and helped her start a new life of no prostitution; however, she then gave birth to three children, none of which were Hosea’s
Describe the Book of Hosea Part Three.
Gomer had returned to her perverse ways, and Hosea consulted God on the matter but was told to keep pursuing Gomer; as a result, a cycle began were Hosea would bring Gomer back to him and they would partake in a relatively happy relationship only for Gomer to return to her old ways
Describe the Book of Hosea Part Four.
It was then revealed in the conversation between God and Hosea that the relationship between Hosea and Gomer was supposed to be representative of God’s relationship with us, as we continually seek his grace, receive it and act upon it, only to return to our old, immoral ways
Describe the Book of Hosea Part Five.
Through this, the Book of Hosea displays the unconditional love of our Lord towards us.
What is dogma?
The central beliefs/teachings of a religion. Corresponding practices arise for dogmas.
Is man capable of misunderstanding or changing (intentionally and accidentally) God’s teachings?
Yes, man is fully performing such actions. In fact, it is these differing interpretations of God’s teachings that bring about the formation do new sects/denominations.
Will God override the freedom of man (intellect and will) to force him (and man fully cognizant) to teach only what He wills?
No, because doing so would be violating our free will, and God treasures that gift very much so in regards to our human lives.
How did God communicate His love and teachings to us before the Incarnation?
Before the Incarnation, God revealed Himself to individuals. These individuals opened Him and began to speak of Him. Through them, others began obeying God.
How did God communicate his love and teachings to us in/after the Incarnation?
Through the Incarnation, God developed a new, more direct, and close-knit way of communicating His love for us. He became human, formed a group, died, resurrected, commissioned His group, and then sent His Spirit. He established, sustains, and guides this group known as the Church today.
Name the differences between Christians and Hindus.
Christians- monotheistic, believe that the One True God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Trinitarian)
Hinduism- is polytheistic, are not Trinitarian
