Q

In what way does the Chruch serve as a deposit and channel for salvific grace?

A

The Church does this through the administration of the Sacraments, each of which provide us a grace of sorts. For instance, in Baptism, we receive the supernatural help needed to combat sin as we are washed away of Original Sin.

Q

How did God communicate his love and teachings to us in/after the Incarnation?

A

Through the Incarnation, God developed a new, more direct, and close-knit way of communicating His love for us. He became human, formed a group, died, resurrected, commissioned His group, and then sent His Spirit. He established, sustains, and guides this group known as the Church today.

Q

Describe Hinduism with regards to Sati.

A

Hindus believe that there is a Supreme Being known as Brahman and that there are numerous gods and goddesses who represent more one or more of Brahman’s aspects. An example of this is the goddess Sati.

17
Q

Describe Sati, the Hindu goddess.

A

Sati was a beautiful woman who was very passionate, which is one of the aspects of Brahman. Because she was very passionate in everything she did, when she fell in love, it wasn’t a half-hearted commitment. She ended up falling for a man which her father did not approve of. But, being the passionate individual she is, she went on to elope with and marry him. One day, she found out that her father did not invite her to an important party because she would bring her husband, who he didn’t approve of, with her. In reaction to this, she burned herself in an act of self-immolation.

18
Q

Describe Sati/suttee, the Hindu practice.

A

Sati/suttee is the act of widow-burning committed by widows after their husbands pass in worship of Sati. They believe that it is better to die and be the wife of their husbands in the next life than to continue living without their husbands. It has been banned by the government and presents the ethical/religious issue of whether or not state and religion should be kept separate.

19
Q

Describe the differences in dogma between Catholics and Protestants.

A

Catholics- We are saved by Christ’s sacrifice and Resurrection (faith) and through our obedience to God (good works). God’s divine will is contained in both the Sacred Scriptures and in the teachings of the Church (traditions; deposit of faith). We have a Magisterium.
Protestants- We are saved by faith in Christ’s sacrifice alone (sola fida; no need to perform good works). God’s divine will is revealed only in the Scriptures (sola scriptura). They do not believe in purgatory and don’t have a Magisterium.

20
Q

Why are there differences in protestant groups?

A

These differences spur from the differing interpretations of Sacred Scriptures and occur quickly because there is no Magisterium. For instance, within Like 22:19 are the words of Institution. They are interpreted differently, for some take it literally and others take it as a symbol or emblem.

21
Q

What are the Aramaic and Greek words for “rock”?

A

23
Q

Describe the Catholic Church.

A
  • Source of the one set of dogma: Scriptures and tradition

24
Q

A

It’s origin is the Greek word kata holos, which is directly translated to mean “universal”

25

27
