What are all the steps?

A

ALWAYS EXAMINE BETTER EAR FIRST

1) Otoscope
2) Free Fields Hearing Test - masked hearing cover tragusone ear and stand on the other side and say numbers (23,33,34)
3) Tuning forks- Rinne’s and Webers
4) otoscope exam

Otoscope Test

A

1) Palpate parts of ear- pinnae, mastoid process etc
2) locate the cone of light and use this to work out side of ear

2) Pull pinnae (external ear) up and back

What does sound vibrations travelling to the effected ear mean on Rinne’s test?

  • to effected ear = Conductive Hearing Loss

- ear working harder

What is the Free Fields Hearing Test

A

At arm’s length, mask one ear and whisper numbers to the other. If unable to hear whisper, increase to normal voice volume.

Weber’s Test

A

Weber test – place fork centrally on forehead and ask patient if louder in right ear, left ear, or no difference.

Rinne’s Test

A

Rinne test – place fork on mastoid process and then in front of the external ear canal, asking patient which is louder.
-place 512Hz tuning fork at the side of the ear not directly in front!!!

How to use tuning fork

A

-WEBERE- use circle to put on head

RINNES- Switch from fork at front to circle on mastoid process
