MSK- Spine Flashcards
What is the order of feel, look, move
1) Look
2) Feel
3) Move
1) Look
-Examine the posterior side
Scoliosis and Posture
Side- Lateral Position:
Cervical lordosis
Thoracic Kyphosis
Lumbar Lordosis
What is cervical Lordosis?
-This is a good feature of the spine and is when it forms a healthy S shape
What is Thoracic Kyphosis?
This is when the thoracic part of the spine becomes bent inwards (bad posture)
What is Lumbar Lordosis?
Inwards curve of the lumbar spine (back sticks out)- c shape
What shape is a healthy spine?
S Shaped
C shaped at the top (Cervical part and Thoracic part)
Feel:
Lymph Nodes:
-patient shrug their shoulders and feel inside the gaps
-Press down harder- spider finger direction
-Supraclavicular
**feel the base of the spine
-indentations suggests sponlyethesis (vertebrae slips forward)
-Mid line- spinous processes
-Paraspinal muscles
-Iliac crest lines- sacral part, more clear when bend bakc with hands on hips
-Chest expansion
Chest Expansion:
X2 thumbs touching at back
Move:
Cervical Spine (neck)
-flexion
-extension
-Lateral - look left and right
-Rotation
Lumbar Spine:
-Flexion
-Extension
-Lateral flexion
Special test:
Schober
How do you carry out the Schober Test?
-Put a dot at 10cm above and 5cm below iliac crests.
-get the patient to bend forwards.
-The line should be >20cm
-Identifies Ankolysing Spondilitis (inflammatory pain- inflammation of the spine)
How to palpate lymph nodes
Get the patient to shrug theit shoulders and feel HARD in the spaces
-press hard (spidery finger order) and do it slower
