Direct Opthalmoscopy Flashcards
Summarise the steps and reflexes which are tested.
(Pupillary Reflexes and Fundoscopy carried out)
BOTH EYES
MAKE SURE ON THE CORRECT SETTING- type of light
-use your right eye for their right vice versa
1) Red reflex- 1m away (0 level)
2) Light reflexes- pupil constriction when light is shone
3) swinging light test- between both pupils (both should do the same thing)
-4) Assessment of the Optic Disc and Retina (Fundoscopy) -SETTING 10
MUST HAVE EYE ON OPTHALMASCOPE TO SEE OPTIC DISC !!!!!! (MAIN TIP!)
hold the opthalmascope in the right hand for right eye vice versa
How is Red reflex carried out?
- Stand at arms length away from the patient
- Use 0 lens magnification as we are testing the eyes normal function
- go down from 10 and goes into more focus
What is the red reflex?
AT ZERO
This is when a light is shined using the opthalmscope into the retina of the eye it becomes a red colour.
-Right and left eyes are compared
Summarise assessment of optic discs and retina
STAND AT ANGLE
right arm right eye
-Blood vessels
-Optic disc
*ask patient to look in the direction where inspecting the retina (e.g inspecting superior retina- patient looks UP)
Carrying out an accurate Pupillary Reflex
MUST Shine the light from the side of the eye
1) tell patient MUST look directly ahead of them
2) watch one eye for constriction
3) next attempt watch other eye for consensual Papillary Reflex
(MUST be tested separately)
