What are Psalms?
they are:
=Poetry and
=prayer
and are intended to be set to music and prayed in worship.
it is also important to recognize that the psalms ARE NOT: doctrinal statements; creeds; or History.
what is the book of psalms often called?
the “Psalter,” as the book of psalms is often called.

What are Lament Psalms?
and what are their function?
these are the most numerous. (a cry to God from distress, pain or sorrow).
=psalm 13 is one of them.
their function is to express a faith and trust in God even when there is no immediate evidence that He is active.

What are Thanksgiving psalms?
and what are their function?
they express thanks and praise to God in response to some action or circumstance in which God’s faithfulness and love have been experienced (18, 138, 107)
And their function is to praise God for something He has done for the Psalmist or to offer thanksgiving in the form of worship.

and what is their function?
they offer praise to God simply for who he is, as creator of the Universe and Lord of history (8, 66, 113)
and their function is to praise God because He is God, and we know He is because we have cried to Him and He has acted.
what have the psalms become to us?
the psalms have become authoritative for us:
- as guide for worship
- as an example of honesty before God
- as a demonstration of the importance of prayer, praise, and meditation

Jesus himself, as well as the testimony of the new testament affirms the biblical authority of the psalms.

what was the material in psalms written for?
the material in the psalms was not written to communicate abstract theology for us. it was written to help people come to worship God from all the turmoil of life, good and bad.
what are the theological implications of psalms?
All Psalms are Different Aspects of Praise. (depending of the life situation of the worshipper or community)

the Psalter teaches us that praise in the mode of lament is just as important as praise in the mode of doxology.
what does the order of the psalms category imply?
this order suggests that the cycle Lament-thanksgivin-hymn was a deliberate progression.
