OSCE wolfson Flashcards
Name 3 appropriate storage media for an avulsed tooth?
Milk
Saliva
Saline (pysiological)
blood
List the dental features of digit sucking?
AOB
Proclined upper incisors
Retroclinced lower incisors
Smaller maxilla, which usually results in a unilateral posterior crossbite.
List 4 methods to break digit sucking?
Bad tasting nail polish Dummy Specialised URA Positive reinforcement behaviour techniques. finger guard Roleplay
What blood tests can be used to measure a patient’s control of diabetes. What are the normal values for these tests?
The A1C test measures your average blood sugar level over the past 2 or 3 months. An A1C below 5.7% is normal, between 5.7 and 6.4% indicates you have prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher indicates you have diabetes.
Name the types of injections you will need to give to anaesthetise the 48?
IANB
Long buccal
Need to numb the inferior alveolar nerve, lingual nerve and long buccal nerve
What type of flap design do you use for the Ex of the retained roots of the 48?
3 sided flap
Your diabetic patient starts to sweat profusely and then loses consciousness. What is the reason for this?
Hyperglycaemia, extremely high levels of sugar in the blood. Need to take their insulin
Results in severe dehydration and sometimes a diabetic coma.
Describe two clinical features of gingivitis?
Bleeding gums inflamed gums swollen gums tender gums receding gums bad breath Presence of plaque
4 clinical features of periodontitis?
Pocket depth B.O.P Attachment loss Increased tooth mobility Presence of abscesses
Give three characteristics of ANUG?
Bad breath Bad taste (metallic) Extremely painful Red, puffy gums bleeding
Common risk factors for ANUG?
Smoker Poor OH Nutritional deficiencies Immunodeficiency Sleep deprivation stress
What piece of equipment would you use to assess the occlusal plane on a complete denture patient?
Foxs bite plane
What is a Willis guage used for?
Checking the OVD, FWS and RVD
How do you mark the smile line on the record block? and why?
Get the pt to smile and mark it.
To this so the lab can set the teeth and not show too much gum.
How do you mark the centre line and midline on the pt?
USe the incisal papilla for the centre line.
The canine line is done using the inner aspect of the eye.
What active component would you use to retract 13,23 and reduce 8mm OJ?
Palatal finger spring and guard 0.5mm HSSW.
What retentive component would you use to retract 13,23 and reduce 8mm OJ?
Adams clasp on the 6’s 0.7mm HSSW
Southend clasps on the 11,12
What anchorage is needed to retract 13,23 and reduce 8mm OJ?
None as the load is equal
What baseplate would you use to retract 13,23 and reduce 8mm OJ?
Self-cure PMMA
FABP OJ+3mm
what kinda condition could be causing chest pains to a patient with a history of angina?
Myocardial infarction
What are other symptoms of a myocardial infarction?
Shortness of breath Pain in the left arm and neck Sweating Vomiting tired lightheaded wheezing anxiety
What medications could you use to tx the pt from your emergency medical kit to tx an MI and give the reason as to why you would use it?
Oxygen - Helps if pt breathless and raises oxygen levels
GTN - widens blood vessels, blood pumps better around the body and therefore more oxygen to the heart.
Aspirin - thins blood, reduces pain and reduces clotting
What does INR stand for and what does it mean?
Internation normalised ratio
Checks how long it takes for blood to clot. The higher the INR the longer it takes.
For an infiltration describe the steps involved in giving it to a pt and what you would use?
25mm needle
Get LA and note batch number and check the expiration date
Assemble the needed
Then once done double sheath it
Bin LA in blue bin and sharps in the orange bin
What are some side effects of LA
Nerve damage Continued numbness, weakness of pins and needles Quicker HR Vomiting Allergic reaction Dizziness
How can you check that anaesthetic has taken effect>
Question pt, ask if they feel numb?
Probe the palate or gingivae
Check the percussion of the tooth with the handle.
Explain parallax?
If the object is closer to the X-ray source it will move in the opposite direction to the X-ray. An example of this is a buccally placed canine.
If the object is further away from the X-ray source it will move in the same direction. For example a palatally placed canine.
How does fluorosis appear on teeth and what teeth does it affect?
As white spots
Can effect 1s,2s,3,s,4s,5s,6s
How does fluorosis occur?
Large amounts of fluoride ingestion during tooth development.
How would you treat fluorosis of the lower central incisor?
Microabrasion
Composite resto
Strip crowns
What is microabrasion?
It is used in aesthetic dentistry to remove discolouration’s by removing a very thin layer of enamel.
What is the fluoride content in mouthwash?
225ppm
What is the fluoride content is fluoride varnish?
22600ppm
