ORGANISATION - The Heart and Blood Vessels Flashcards
Heart
Pumps blood around the body in a double circulatory system
Left Right Atria
Receive blood from veins
Left Right Ventricles
Pump the blood out into arteries
How does Blood Move?
Blood enters heart through atria. Atria contracts and force blood into ventricles. Ventricles contract and force blood out of heart. Valves make sure blood flows in correct direction.
Pacemaker
Electrical devices used to correct irregularities in the heart rate. Natural resting heart rate is controlled by group of cells located in the right atrium that act as a pacemaker
Gaseous Exchange
Heart sends blood to lungs via pulmonary artery. Air obtained by breathing reaches lungs through trachea. Trachea divides into 2 tubes - bronchi. Bronchi divide to form bronchioles. Bronchioles divide until they end in tiny air sacs called alveoli. Blood is taken back to the heart through the pulmonary vein.
Arteries
Take blood from your heart to your organs. Thick walls
Veins
Take blood from your organs to your heart. Thinner walls and valves to prevent backflow
Capillaries
Allow substances needed by cells to pass out of the blood. Allow substances produced by the cells to pass into the blood. Narrow, thin-walled blood vessels
