Bacteria
May damage cells directly or produce toxins (poisons) that damage tissues
Salmonella
Type of food poisoning caused by bacteria. Spread by bacteria ingested in food or on food prepared in unhygienic conditions. Bacteria secretes toxins which cause fever abdominal cramps, vomitig and diarrhoea. Chickens and eggs contain bacteria so chicken in UK are vaccinated against salmonella
Gonorrhoea
Sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by bacteria. Spread by sexual contact. Symptoms are thick, yellow or green discharge from vagina or penis and pain while urinating. It was easily treated with the antibiotic penicillin until many resistant strains appeared. Use of barrier method of contraception e.g condom can stop bacteria being passed on
