HOMEOSTASIS AND RESPONSE - Nervous System Flashcards
Nervous System
Enables humans to react to their surroundings and co-ordinate their behaviour
How Does Information Pass Along?
Information from receptors passes along neurones as electrical impulses to the CNS. The CNS coordinates the response of effectors which may be muscles contracting or glands secreting hormones
Stimulus –> Receptor –> Co-Ordinator –> Effector –> Response
Reflex Action
1) The pain stimulus is detected by receptors.
2) Impulses from the receptor pass along a sensory neuron to the CNS
3) An impulse then passes through a relay neuron
4) A motor neuron carries an impulse to the effector
5) The effector (usually a muscle) responds e.g withdraw a limb away from source of pain
Synapses
Gaps between neurones. When an electrical impulse reaches a synapse a chemical is released that diffuses across the gap between 2 neurons. This causes an electrical impulse to be generated in the 2nd neuron
