oral cavity Flashcards
what are the two parts of the oral cavity
oral vestibule (between cheeks and lips and teeth) and oral cavity proper (arch of teeth)
what is the posterior boundary of the oral cavity
oropharyngeal isthmus
what are the contents of the oral vestibule
Lips, gingivae, upper and lower labial frenula
what are the contents of the oral cavity proper
Hard and soft palates, Geniohyoid muscles, mylohyoid muscles Dental arches, Isthmus of fauces
what are the 4 types of lingual papillae
filiform papillae
fungiform papillae
foliate papillae
circumvallate papillae
what is the lingual papillae
small structures on the upper surface of the tongue that give it its characteristic rough texture
what does the chorda tympani innervate
a branch of the facial nerve that carries gustatory (taste) sensory innervation from the front of the tongue and parasympathetic (secretomotor) innervation to the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands.
what innervates the taste buds in the inferior surface of soft palate
the facial nerve via the greater petrosal nerve, pterygopalatine nerve and lesser petrosal nerve, sometimes by the glossopharyngeal nerve.
what does the glossopharyngeal nerve innervate in oral cavity
Taste buds in the circumvallate papillae, postsulcal part of the tongue and in the palatoglossal arches and the oropharynx
what innervates the taste buds in the extreme pharyngeal part of the tongue and epiglottis
the internal laryngeal branch of the vagus nerve
what is the front 2/3 of the tongue called
oral presulcal
what is the back 1/3 of the tongue called
pharyngeal postsulcal
what is the pharyngeal postsulcal part of tongue
base of tongue and posterior to palatoglossal arches
what are the extrinsic tongue muscles
hyoglossus, genioglossus, styloglossus and palatoglossus
what is the function of the hypglossos
flattens tongue and pulls it down and back
