Glands Flashcards
what are the functions of the salivary glands
lubrication of food for swallowing, moistening the buccal mucosa to assist speech, provision of enzymes to facilitate taste and digestion, secretion of metabolic hormones
what is the parotid gland bordered by
SCM, zygomatic arch and masseter muscle
what is the function of the parotid duct
secretes saliva into mouth opposite second upper molar crown
what does the parotid duct pierce
the buccinator muscle
where is the parotid gland
retromandibular fossa
which vein and artery pass through the parotid gland
external carotid artery and retromandibular vein
what innervates the parotid gland
glossopharyngeal nerve
what type of gland is the parotid
endocrine serous
what type of gland is the submandibular
seromucous
what is the function of the submandibular gland
Produces serous (amylase, digestion) and mucous saliva (mucin, lubricant), which moistens the mouth and aids in chewing, swallowing, digestion, and oral cleanliness.
Unstimulated, the submandibular glands provide the majority of saliva to the mouth.
On stimulation, the parotid gland takes over, producing the majority of saliva.
where does the submandibular duct open
in oral cavity at the sublingual caruncle beside the frenulum of tongue
what supplies the submandibular gland
facil and lingual arteries
describe the lymphatics of the thyroid gland
thyroid lymphatic vessels communicate with tracheal plexus and pass to the prelaryngeal nodes (above thyroid isthmus) and to the pretracheal and paratracheal nodes.
Some vessels may drain into the brachiocephalic nodes and laterally the gland drains into the deep cervical nodes.
where is parasympathetic secretomotor innervation from
the chorda tympani nerve, branch of facial nerve via the submandibular ganglion
what type of gland is the sublingual
mucous
