Symptoms of optic neuritis

A

decrease in visual acuity over hours or days

poor discrimination of colours, ‘red desaturation’

pain worse on eye movement

relative afferent pupillary defect

central scotoma

What is afferent pupillary defect?

A

‘swinging light test’

pupils using a light shone alternately in each eye reveals that when the light is shone in the right eye both pupils constrict but when the light source immediately moves to the left eye both eyes appear to dilate

the affected and normal eye appears to dilate when light is shone on the affected

A

high-dose steroids
recovery usually takes 4-6 weeks
