Meningitis Flashcards
characteristic of cerebrospinal fluid in bacterial meningitis ?
Appearance is cloudy
there is hypoglycaemia (less than half of plasma)
there is proteinemia >1g/l
there is high WBC - polymorphs
Characteristic of CSF viral meningitis ?
Appearance is CLEAR or CLOUDY
60-80 percent of plasma glucose
protein is normal normal
high WBC - lymphocytes
characteristic of CSF in tuberculous
CLOUDY WITH FIBRIN WEB
glucose again low (less than 1/2 of plasma )
high protein levels >1g/l
high WBC - LYMPHOCYTES not as much as viral and bacterial in the thousands
characteristic of CSF in Fungal infection
appearance - cloudy
hypoglycaemic
protein is HIGH
high WBC - Lymphocytes not as much as viral and bacterial in thousands
Golden standard to detect TB meningitis from CSF?
Ziehl nelson staining only 20 percent sensitive - need PCR high sensitivity
common causes for viral meningitis ?
coxackie virus
echovirus
mumps
herpes simplex virus (HSV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes zoster viruses
HIV
measles
The findings of the lumbar puncture are typical for ‘aseptic meningitis’ of
enteroviruses are the most common - coxackie virus
Cerebrospinal fluid: raised lymphocytes
viral meningitis/encephalitis
TB meningitis
partially treated bacterial meningitis
Lyme disease
Behcet’s,
SLE
lymphoma, leukaemia
