Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology Flashcards
Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology: Branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of disorder and disease of the eye.
Otorhinolaryngology
Otorhinolaryngology: Focuses on the ear, nose, and throat and includes sensory capabilities of the nose, and ear and roles of the nose and throat in respiration and digestion.
The Ocular Adnexa
Eye is a highly specialized and complex structure that functions as a receptor organ for sight. It receives images and then transmits the image signal to the brain for interpretation.
Eye includes the adnexa and eyeball. There are numerous structures of the eye.
Adnexa is the structures outsides of the eyeball (orbit, eye muscles eyelids, eyelashes, conjunctiva, and lacrimal apparatus)
Orbit: Medical term for eye socket or the bony cavity of the skull that holds and protects the eyeball and related structures, including the nerves and vessels.
Eye muscles: There are 6 eye muscles that allow precise movements of the eyeball
-superior and inferior oblique muscles
-superior and inferior rectus muscles
-lateral and medial rectus muscles
Canthus: Angle where the upper and lower eyelids meet at the corner of the eye.
Eyelashes and eyelids: Protective structure contain tiny hairs, called cilia, that help prevents debris from entering the eye
Conjunctiva: Transparent mucous membrane that lines and protects the underside of each eyelid
Lacrimal apparatus: Structure produces, stores, and removes tears. It houses lacrimal glands, lacrimal canal, lacrimal sac, lacrimal duct, and lacrimal fluid produced by the glands.
