OPERATIONS Flashcards
“99” TRANSMISSION
BROADCAST OF INFO OF COLLECTIVE INTEREST TO ALL AIRCRAFT ON A PARTICULAR FREQUENCY.
AIR PLAN
SCHEDULE OF FLIGHT OPS for 24 HOUR PERIOD
ALPHA STRIKE
TACTICAL OPERATION IN WHICH MAJORITY OF AIR WING AIRCRAFT PARTICIPATE IN AN INTEGRATED STRIKE AGAINST GROUND TARGETS.
ALTRV (ALTITUDE RESERVATIONS)
BLOCK ALTITUDE OF AIRSPACE EXTENDING FOR A SPECIFIED DISTANCE ON EITHER SIDE OF PROPOSED ROUTE OF FLIGHT. normally used for mass movement of aircraft or other special use requiremants, which cannot be otherwise accomplished.
procedures governed for ALTITUDE RESERVATIONS?
FAA HANDBOOK 7610.4/ OPNAV 3722.30(SERIES)
ANGELS
ALTITUDE OF AIRCRAFT IN THOUSANDS OF FEET. USED IN PILOT/CONTROLLER COMMS
ARC
Track over the ground of an aircraft flying at a constant distance from a navigational aid by reference to Distance Meacuring Equipment (DME)
AXIAL DECK
Part of the flightdeck oriented along the longitudinal aids of the carrier
AZIMUTH
A magnetic bearing extended from an aircraft navigation aid(TACAN) or air traffic control systems(PALS and ICLS). Azimuth information provides course guidance to aircraft conducting instrument and radar approaches(PALS).
BALL
A pilot report that the visual landing aid is in sight.
BASE RECOVERY COURSE (BRC)
The ship’s magnetic heading during flight operations.
BINGO
An order to proceed and land at the field specified, utilizing a bingo profile. Aircraft is considered to be in an emergency/fuel critical situation. Bearing, distance and destination shall be provided.
BREAK TIME ( Ready Deck)
anticipated time specified by Prifly that the deck will be ready to recover aircraft and the first aircraft of a case II recovery is expected to be at the break.
BURBLE
Air flow disturbances on and about the carrier that can detrimentally effect aircraft approach and landing performance. Cause mainly by island that effects WOD.
Card-Of-The-Day
Information card distributed daily by CVIC, which identifies daily changing call signs of battle group units as well as various base numbers used in coded transmissions on uncovered circuits. Card normally classified CONFIDENTIAL.
CHARLIE
Signal for aircraft to land aboard the ship. A number suffix indicates time delay before landing.
CLARA
Pilot transmission indicating pilot does not have the VLA(BALL) in sight.
COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME (UTC)
Time at Prime Meridian. aka GMT or ZULU
D & D Display and Decision
Module in CDC where the CDC Watch Officer, TAO,
DELTA
A signal given to hold and conserve fuel at an altitude and position appropriate to type aircraft and case recovery in effect.
Departure Radials
TACAN Radials used to provide lateral separation between departing aircraft during case II and III departures.
DEPARTURE REFERENCE RADIAL (DRR)
TACAN radial assignment by CATCC to which all Squadron departure radials are referenced.
EASY RIDER
Term used pilot/controller comms to refer to Precison Approach and Landing System(PALS)
FINAL CONTROL
A control position in CATCC responsible for control of aircraft on final approach during CASE III until transfer of control to the LSO or aircraft reaches approach weather minimums. Approach control retains overall responsibility for seperation of aircraft.
Who is part of Ops?
CATCC, METOC, CDC, Strike ops, CVIC
What work centers fall under CATCC?
AirOps and CCA (Carrier Controlled Approach) ATO
What is the purpose of CATCC?
Status keeping of all carrier air ops and control of all airborne aircraft
What are the watch stations in AirOps?
AirOps Officer, Assistant AirOps O, AirOps Supervisor, Land/Launch record keeper, Plotter
What is the job of CCA?
Operational control of AC departing ship and recovery of inbound AC
What are the positions manned in CCA?
Departure Control - control of departing AC in case I, II, III
Marshal Control -Control of inbound AC in case I, II, III Brings into the Track
Approach Control -control of AC on approach in case II and III, between handoff from Marshal and transfer of control to PriFly in Case II, makes holes for bolters
Final Control -control of AC on final approach during case III, primarily for Glide Slope
What is METOC?
Meteorology and Oceanography, collects interprets and disseminates weather info.
What is a Case I condition?
Ceiling no lower then 3,000 ft and visibility of 5nm
What is a Case II condition?
Ceiling no lower then 1,000 ft and visibility of 5 nm
What is a Case III condition?
Ceiling below 1,000 ft and visibility of 5 nm, and 30 minutes after sunrise and before sunset.
What is Strike Ops mission?
Aids in weaponeering of ordnance, coordinates with warfare commanders to establish airplan
What is CVIC?
Carrier Intelligence center, provide research data, and report on collection of efforts of AC
What is OZ division for?
Day-to-day ops of CVIC and SUPPLOT, intell officers, ISs, ETs, and ICs work here
What is OS division for?
Provide special intelliegence comms, both internal and external to battle group. Usually CTs
What is OP division for?
Provides photographic support, has 2 photo labs, Main lab for photographic support for admin
and official events. CVIC lab for aircrew and TARPS (tactical airborne reconnaissance Pod
System) films
What is ILM?
The SPN-41, aka bulls eye.
What is the purpose of the bulls eye?
Measures azimuth and elevation and relays data to a display within the AC
What is PALS?
Precision Approach and Landing System, aka easy rider, SPN-46.
What is the purpose of PALS?
Perform instrument approaches under manual or auto control, provides continuous as & el inf
