FIREFIGHTING FUNDAMENTALS Flashcards
What is the primary job of firefighters? Second?
To Save Lives, extinguish fires and limit damage
What are the 4 elements of the Fire Tetrahedron?
Heat, Fuel, Oxygen, and Chemical chain reaction
How many classes of fires are there?
4
What is Class A fire, and what do you use to extinguish it?
Produce ash, use water or AFFF
What is a Class B, extinguishing agent?
Flammable liquid, like gas, fuels, oil, use AFFF Halon 1211, PKP, and CO2
What is Class C, extinguishing agent?
Electrical fire, for energized use CO2 (non-corrosive)Halon PKP H2O in high fog at least 4 feet away For deenergized treat as a AB or D
What is Class D, extinguishing agent?
Combustible Metal like magnesium and titanium. Use water in Large quantities, like jettison
What is AFFF?
`Aqueous Film Forming Foam. Noncorrosive and unlimited shelf life.shipboard is 6% concentrate
66. When is H2O not good to use?
In large aircraft fuel fires, ability to cool aircraft and provide a heat shield to personnel.
When is H2O not good to use?
In large aircraft fuel fires, ability to cool aircraft and provide a heat shield to personnel.
What is Halon 1211?
Primarily for Class B and C. Colorless, Sweet smelling with no residue. It inhibits the chemical chain reaction.
CO2?
Primarily for Class Band C. Colorless and Odorless. 1.5 times heavier than air. Displaces Oxygen
What is PKP?
Potassium Bicarbonate (purple-k-powder) primarily for Class B. breaking the combustion chain. Does NOT have cooling capabilities, so will not result in permanent extinguishing.
