Online Cell Respiration Lab Flashcards
Know the Purpose and general procedure for the Online Cell Respiration Lab: Germinating v. Non-germinating Peas at Room and Cold Temperatures
measuring cell respiration through oxygen consumption
Set up of respirometer
Has a pipet and glass tub
measures the pressure change due to consumption of oxygen
Purpose of glass beads
It is the control group to account for fluctuating temperatures
Purpose of KOH
convert CO2 into solid so only oxygen can be measured through volume
Relationship of water movement through pipette and O2 consumption (why does water flow into the pipette?)
Volume and pressure is low in the glass part of the respirometer so the water will push the oxygen bubble ot go in that direction because the volume of air in the vial was reduced when KOH combined with CO2 and water was then pulled in by the suction.
Effect of temperatures (room vs. cold) on respiration rate
Low temperatures= decrease cell respiration
high temperatures= increase cellular respiration
Effect of germination v. non-germination on respiration rate
seed germinates= respiration rate increases
non germinating seeds use very little respiration
