Endosymbiotic Theory Flashcards
1
Q
What is the endosymbiotic theory?
A
Mitochondria and Chloroplasts were once free lviing cells; Free living cells get absorbed by cells and work together to survive
2
Q
What was the ancestor cell for mitochondria?
A
Aerobic bacteria (aeorbic cell respiration)
3
Q
What was the ancestor cell for chloroplasts?
A
cyanobacterium because of the pigment, blue green algae
4
Q
What is the evidence to support the endosymbiotic theory?
A
- double membrane
2, own DNA- circular - own ribosomes
- reproduce on their own- binary fission
- make their own proteins
- size of mitochondria & chloroplasts are similar to ancient prokaryotes
- ribosomes size similar to ancient bacteria
