What is teh relationship between cell size and the efficiency of the cell?
smaller cells (high SA:V) have better efficiency with exchange of materials
What would happen if the cell is too big?
It would have a large volume and a small SA:V. It would not be able to transfer the material efficiently due to the increased demand of materials as well
How would you increase teh SA:V if teh volume is too high?
You would need more complex sturctures that have membrane folds, as they can do more work.
How do root hairs on surface of plant roots increase SA:V?
by having an increased absorption of water and nutrients
What does teh small intestine have that helps for a large SA:V?
Vlli- highly folding containing finger-like projections
Microvilli- increases SA for absorption of nutrients
How do leaves get rid of waste and obtain nutrients?
Through stomatal openings of leaves- obtain an release molecules in the surrounding environment
What is the idea of cell compartmentalization?
Having parts inside parts
increases SA & specialization –> able to perform job more efficiently
