Dementia

A

Dementia is a syndrome that involves slow cognitive decline. Clinically, this may look like a chronic state of confusion. There are many types of dementia, with the most common being Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Delirium

A

Delirium is an acute presentation in which cognition fluctuates. Unlike dementia, which is progressive in nature, delirium generally has a trigger, such as:

Drug therapy
Fluid or electrolyte imbalance
Infection
Hypoxemia
Relocation
Critical care setting
