Blood, Leukemia and Hodgkins Flashcards
1
Q
Serum
A
plasma without clotting factor
2
Q
Fibrinogin
A
clotting factor
3
Q
Leukemia
A
A group of malignant disorders affecting the blood and blood-forming tissues of Bone marrow, Lymph system, Spleen
Cancers of the blood
4
Q
Acute lymphocytic leukemia
A
- a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow
- The word “acute” comes from the fact that the disease progresses rapidly and creates immature blood cells, rather than mature ones
- the bone marrow makes too many lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell).
5
Q
Chronic myelogenous leukemia
A
- cancer of the white blood cells
- disease in which the bone marrow makes too many white blood cells
- a slowly progressing blood and bone marrow disease
6
Q
Non Hodgkins Lymphoma (NHL)
A
is a cancer of the lymphatic system, part of the body’s immune system. It occurs when tumors develop from white blood cells known as lymphocytes.
- Malignant neoplasm of primarily b cells (most common), t cells or natural kills cell origin
- More common than Hodgkin Lymphoma.
- No reed sterburb cells in NHD
Note: neoplasm is an abnormal growth of cells, also known as a tumor.
7
Q
Multiple Myeloma
A
cancer of the plasma cell
- neoplastic plasma cells infiltrate the bone marrow and destroy bone.
- There is an excessive production of plasma cells.
- Skeletal pain it the major manifestation ( pelvis, spine, and rib)
8
Q
Hodgkins Lymphoma
A
- type of blood cancer that typically develops in your lymph nodes.
- proliferation of abnormal, giant multinucleated cells called Reed Sternberg cells, which are located in the lymph nodes.
- Normally starts in cervical cells then goes to liver then spleen and lungs
