what is a food allergy?
when symptoms are caused by an immune reaction, usually IgE mediated
what is food intolerance?
a non immune reaction e.g lactose intolerance
what can a lack of vitamin k be seen as/
bleeding tendency ( seen as purpura and easy bruising on skin)
what is Vit K needed for?
coagulation
what is Vit A needed for/
epithelial proliferation
what can a lack of Vit A present as?
papules on thighs and upper arms, dry skin
what can vit B2 deficiency present like/
lesions of margins of lips and corners of mouth (cheilosis and angular stomatitis)
what can vit B3 deficiency present like?
dermatitis
delirium
diarrhoea
death (if not treated )
what can vit B6 deficiency present like?
dermatitis on face, scalp, neck, shoulder and buttocks and perineum and tongue inflammation (glossitis)
what can both folate and Vit B12 deficiency look like?
anaemia angular stomatitis glossitis hair depigmentation skins and mucous membrane pigmentation neuro symptoms for vit B12
what are the 2 types of protein energy malnutrition?
Marasmus
and
Kwashiorkor
what can vit C deficiency present like/
hyperkeratosis around hair follicles, bent hairs, inflamed gums, poor wound healing also muscle fatigue , malaise, muscle and bone pain
what is Marasmus?
weight loss by fat breakdown
the child is very thin with muscle wasting
no oedema
skin is dry and wrinkled
hair falls out
what is Kwashiorkor/
caused by very low protein intake with okay carb intake
there is oedema and children often develop pot belly
skin shows irregular patchy discolouration
