nothing! they are the same

increased thickness of keratin layer
what is parakeratosis?
persistence of nuclei in keratin layer
what is acanthosis?
increased thickness of epidermis
what is papillomatosis?
irregular epithelial thickening
what is sponglosis?
oedema between kertainocytes
what is the main symptom of dermatits?
ITCH
describe the acute phase of dermatitis?
red lesions
oedema
ooze/scaling and crusting
papulovesicular
describe the chronic phase of dermatitis?
thickining (lichenification)
elevated plaques
increased scaling
itchy
ill defined
erythematous (red)
scaly

what is contact allergic dermatits?
when you get dermatitis when you come in contact with certain chemicals, nickel, plants, latex gloves etc
how do identify the substances which cause contact dermatits?
patch testing
what is irritant contact dermatits?
no specific physical irritation rather than a specific allergic reaction e.g from soap (too much washing up) or a nappy rash
what type of dermatitis is a nappy rash?
irritant contact
to urine
usually get ulceration too
what is atopic eczema like?
on flexor surfaces
ill defined erythema and scaling
generalised dry skin
associated with other atopic disease-asthma, rhinitis, food allergy
chronic changes in atopic eczema?
lichenification
excoriation
secondary infection
crusting indicated what type of infection (bacteria wise)
staph. aureus
monomorphic punched out lesions
eczema herpeticum
what is eczema herpeticum
herpes simplex viral infection (secondary infection of eczema)

how do you treat eczema?
emollients
avoidance
topical steroids
treat infection
phototherapy
systemic immunosuppressants
biologic agents
what can cause stasis eczema?
hydrostatic pressure
oedema
red cell extrasation
