non surgical treatment of lung cancer Flashcards
chemotherapy side effect
marrow suppression, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, hair loss, nail changes, neuropathy, increased stroke risk, neutropenic sepsis
radiotherapy side effect
acute- lethargy, oesophagitis, SOB due to pneumonitis, long term- pulmonary fibrosis, oesophageal stricture, cardiac problems
chemotherapy outcomes
median survival of less than 12 months with chemo alone but palliative
ECOG (eastern cooperative group) measurement
performance status measurement 0 asymtomatic and well, 5 is dead
adjuvant
after definitive procedure
neoadjuvant
before definitive procedure
adjuvant therapy examples
radiotherapy and chemotherapy
neoadjuvant therapy examples
chemotherapy in stage 3 sometimes but overall not used much
plan for radiotherapy
planning for 2 weeks, assessing fitness and discussing plan, 55Gy in 20 fractions - mon to fri for 4 weeks
plan for radiotherapy
planning for 2 weeks, assessing fitness and discussing plan, must be fit in lung function, 55Gy in 20 fractions - mon to fri for 4 weeks
plan for chemotherapy
cycle lasts for 21 days, start radiotherapy with cycle 2 of chemo
outcome of concurrent chemoRT
survival rate better than RT alone, 2 year survival rate is around 27%. increases toxicity tho because chemo is systemic. more nausea, GI upset, infection
