Lung function tests and common lung conditions Flashcards
obstructive lung disease
obstruction of air flow especially on expiration
restrictive lung disease
restriction of lung expansion, loss of lung compliance.
spirometry
measurements can be static or dynamic. blow into a machine
results you would see for patient with obstructive lung disease
big reduction in FEV1 and small reduction in FVC 42%
results you would see for patient with restrictive lung disease
reduction in both FEV1 and FVC in proportion. normal or 90%
static spirometry
only consideration made is the volume exhaled
dynamic spirometry
time taken to exhale a certain volume is what is being measured
what can spirometry measure
tidal volume, expiratory reserve volume, inspiratory reserve volume, vital capacity, inspiratory capacity. anything that does not include residual volume
normal ratio of FEV1 and FVC should be roughly
80%
FVC
forced vital capacity
FEV1
forced expiratory volume in 1 second
what shape on pressure graph for obstructive
leaf shape, thicker on bottom than in top
what shape on pressure graph for restrictive
long thin oval
in obstructive lung diseases what is harder expiration or inspiration
expiration
in restrictive lung diseases what is harder expiration or inspiration
inspiration
