non HIV & HIV pharm - Exam 1A Flashcards
what class is Acyclovir
Anti-viral (non-HIV)
Acyclovir indications
HSV 1&2
Herpes zoster
Chickenpox/varicella
Acyclovir SE
GI distress
Renal impairment
Seizures
ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenia)
Tissue necrosis w/ IV route
Acyclovir nursing considerations
Not a cure
Monitor pt with low platelet counts
what class is Oseltamivir (tamiflu)
Anti-viral (non-HIV)
Oseltamivir (tamiflu) MOA
Inhibit neuraminidases in influenza viruses
Oseltamivir (tamiflu) indications
Prophylaxis and to treat active flu disease (48hr of sx onset)
Swine flu
Oseltamivir (tamiflu) SE
N/v
Seizures
Renal impairment
Oseltamivir (tamiflu) nursing considerations
Most active against flu A
Has to be started before or within 48 hrs of symptom onset
Only given to elderly & immunocompromised after known exposure
what class is Ganciclovir
Anti-viral (non-HIV)
Ganciclovir MOA
Inhibits viral DNA polymerases resulting in chain termination
Ganciclovir indication
Cytomegalovirus (CMBV -> immuno comp pts)
Ganciclovir SE
Very toxic
Nephrotoxic if given with other nephrotoxic drugs
Ganciclovir nursing considerations
BBW: hematologic toxicity, fertility impairment, fetal toxicity, carcinogenesis
Don’t give with imipenem cilastatin bc seizure potential
Do not crush or split d/t skin irritation
what class are NTRIs
antiretrovirals
NTRIs MOA
Inhibits reverse transcriptase which blocks HIV to incorporate into the host cells DNA
NTRIs indications
HIV
NTRIs SE
Peripheral neuropathy
Pancreatitis
Lipoatriphy
Hepatic steatosis
NTRIs nursing considerations
Usually give 2 of these
BBW: lactic acidosis syndrome
Acyclovir MOA
1)interferes with viral nucleic acid synthesis, its regulation or both (DNA & RNA)
2)prevents virus from binding to cells so virus cannot get into cells preventing replication
3)stimulates the body’s immune system to kill the virus
