chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disorder caused by demyelination & axonal injury
-has remissions & exacerbations
-potentially disabling disease of brain & spinal cord
-highly variable pace & many atypical forms

electric shock like sensations that run down the back and/or limbs upon flexion of the neck
specific to MS
sx of ms
-motor and visual losses/nystagmus
-diplopia
-balance problems
-vertigo
-bladder problems (constipation)
-limb ataxia
-pain, depression, fatigue
-memory loss
-personality changes
-spasticity
-intention tremors
-hearing loss
-tinnitus
-heat intol
screening of MS
-medical hx & in depth neurologic exam (includes gait, posture, coordination & balance)
-MRI (looking for lesions)
-evoked potential test (measures nerve sensations)
-lumbar puncture (will see inc WBCs or proteins)
dx of MS requires
-two or more episodes of exacerbation seperated by 1 month & lasting more than 24hrs
OR
-clinical hx of clearly defined exacerbations & remissions followed by progression of sx over 6 months
OR
-slow & stepwise progression of S&S over 5 months
PT and OT for MS
-strengthening exercises
-adapting how daily tasks are accomplished
-mobility assistance
teaching for MS
-recognizing triggers (infection, trauma, stress, change in environment)
-need to rest
-exercise: regular aerobic to improve strength, muscle tone, balance & coordination + helps w/ depression
-environmental control
-well balanced diet
-have good coping skills & stay connected in social life
