Most populous state. Produces much less than it consumes

No phylloxera. Less than 3% of AUS production

Abnormally hot, high humidity. Lots of rainfall though season and at harvest

Exceptionally long lived(10-20) dry Semillon. Honey, buttery, nutty, suggest oak when none traditionally used
Hunter Valley Chardonnay
Peachy, soft with viscosity. AUS 1st Chard of note was here by Tyrrell’s
Hunter Valley Verdelho
Soft, flavorsome, no oak
Upper Hunter Valley
Chard dominant. More acute white wines. RS,SB. PN found unsuitable
Central Ranges Zone
Mudgee, Orange, Cowra
Mudgee
Oldest (1858). No phylloxera. Declining. Pernod-Ricard, Treasury Wine Estates left. Robert Oatley Vineyards scaled back Mudgee brands
Mudgee climate
Hot, much less rain, esp during harvest
Mudgee grapes
Shiraz, CS, deeply colored, intensely flavored. Blended w/ Hunter Valley reds. Chard
Orange
South of Mudgee, on hillsides. Mt Canobolos, extinct volcano
Orange climate
Coolest of the three regions. Continental, warm, cold nights, dry summers. Slow ripening and late harvests
Orange style
Lively, zesty Chard. Some of AUS best SB. Midweight CS, Merlot, Shiraz, variety typicity
Cowra climate
Warmer, lower elevation. Flat plains, high yields, irrigation
