Neutropenic Sepsis Flashcards
What is neutropenic sepsis?
Sepsis with a very small neutrophil count
What neutrophil count is diagnostic of neutropenic sepsis?
<1x10^9/L
What allergy must you know of before treating a patient with neutropenic sepsis?
Penicillin allergy
What antibiotic is used to treat normal neutropenic sepsis?
Tazocin
(meropenem if penicillin allergy)
What type of antibiotic is meropenem?
Strong and broad spectrum
How is sepsis managed?
Oh Boy Alexander Laing Fuck U
Oxygen (IV, high-flow)
Bloods
Antibiotics (IV)
Lactate
Fluids (IV)
Urine measurements
In sepsis, in what time frame should you give IV antibitoics?
Within 1 hour
What is done as prophylaxis treatment for neutropenic sepsis?
Antifungals
Antibiotics
G-CSF
Vaccination
Protective environments
What is the function of G-CSF?
It stiumlates bone marrow to produce granulocytes and stem cells
What is G-CSF?
A glycoprotein
Why does tachypnoea occur in sepsis?
As acidosis occurs, so you try and blow-off as much CO2 as possible which is called hypoventilating
Acidosis -> hypoventilation -> tachypnoea
What antibiotics are used to treat severe neutropenic sepsis?
Tazocin + gentamicin
(obvs meropenem if allergic to penicillin)
If the patient has a peniclin allergy, no mater the severity of the sepsis, what antibiotic is used?
Meropenem
What antibiotic is used to treat septic shock in neutropenic sepsis?
Meropenem
If a patient is in septic shock, what should you always do?
