Blood types Flashcards
What are the 4 different types of blood?
A
B
AB
O
(Can obvs get negative and positive for each one)
Type O blood is the universal donor, why is that?
As it contains no antigens
So it doesn’t matter what antibodies are preset in the blood of the recipient
Type AB is the universal acceptor, why is this?
As it contains both A-antigen and B-antigen
So the recipients blood needs to have both these antibodies, but since AB has all types of antigens it can just get any other type
Someone with type A blood can get blood from which other types?
A and O
Why can someone with type A blood receive blood from only types A and O and not B or AB?
As type A blood contains A-antigens and B-antibodies, so it can’t get any blood that has B-antibodies (types B and AB)
In basic terms, what determines the blood you can receive?
The antigens and antibodies present into the blood
If you have a certain type of antigen, you can revive the blood that contains that antigen
If you have a certain type of antibody, you can’t revive the blood that contains that antibody
Someone with type B blood can receive blood from what other types?
B and O
Someone with type AB blood can receive blood from what other types?
A
B
AB
O
(It’s the universal acceptor)
Someone with type O blood can receive blood from what other types?
O
Why can someone with type AB blood get any of type of blood but can only give it to other AB types?
As it contains both A- and B-antigens
What does positive and negative mean next to a blood type?
If it’s Rhesus positive or negative
What is the relationship between RBC blood and FFP?
It’s just the opposite
So type O FFP is the universal recipient and type AB FFP is the universal donor
How many samples are needed for blood banking?
2
How long can blood be held in the blood bank?
7 days
What tests are undergone for blood in the blood bank?
Coombs test (DAGT) Cross matching
