Neurologic Assessment Flashcards
What connects the two hemispheres of the cerebrum?
Corpus callosum
Name the four lobes of each hemisphere of the cerebrum.
Frontal lobe, Parietal lobe, Temporal lobe, Occipital lobe
What is the function of the frontal lobe?
Responsible for speech (Broca’s Area), judgment, insight, problem solving, and emotion
Which side of the frontal lobe controls the right side of the body?
Left side
Which side of the frontal lobe controls the left side of the body?
Right side
What functions are associated with the temporal lobe?
Auditory, comprehension, speech, taste, receiving and interpreting impulses from the ear
What functions are associated with the parietal lobe?
Sensory and proprioception, interprets tactile sensation including touch, pain, and temperature
What functions are associated with the occipital lobe?
Vision, reading with understanding, visual receptor centers
What are the two components of the diencephalon?
Thalamus and Hypothalamus
What is the function of the thalamus?
Screening and directing impulses to specific areas in the cerebral cortex
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
Regulating many body functions, including water balance, appetite, vital signs, sleep cycle, pain perception, and emotional status
Where is the brainstem located?
Between the cerebral cortex and the spinal cord
What are the three parts of the brainstem?
Midbrain, Pons, Medulla Oblongata
What is the function of the midbrain?
Serves as a relay center for ear and eye reflexes
What is the function of the pons?
Links the cerebellum to the cerebrum, responsible for various reflex actions
Where is the brain located?
In the cranial cavity
How many central hemispheres does the cerebrum have?
2
What does the central nervous system encompass?
The brain and the spinal cord
What are the four major divisions of the brain?
Cerebrum, Diencephalon, Brain Stem, Cerebellum
