Nerve supply: lower limb Flashcards
nerve supply of the lower limb: general
- lumbar plexus
- sacral plexus
lumbosacral plexus
specific: lumbar plexus
- anterior (ventral) rami of L1-4
specific: sacral plexus
- anterior (ventral) rami of L 4-5 (lumbosacral trunk)
- S1-4
major branches: lumbar plexus (4)
- femoral n (L2-4)
- saphenous n
- obturator n (L2-4)
- lateral cutaneous n of the thigh (L2-3)
major branches: sacral plexus (8)
- superior gluteal n
- inferior gluteal n
- n to quadratus femoris
- n to obturator internus
- post femoral cutaneous n of the thigh
- sciatic n
- tibial n and common peroneal n
- pudendal n
motor distribution areas: femoral n
ant com thigh
- majority of ant com of thigh and leg medially
motor distribution areas: obturator
medial com thigh
- inner thigh
sciatic n variations: (3)
most common:
- non split inf to piriformis
early split:
- btw piriformis and inferiorly
- superior and inferiorly
- both btw the piriformis
safe injection sites in the buttocks:
- from highest point of iliac crest
- plane through ischial tuberosity
- halfway draw line
- upper lateral quadrant best place
peroneal nerve damage:
- from broken fibula
- drop foot -> affects gait
arterial supply: from descending aorta superficial structures (3)
descending aorta - common iliac artery - external iliac a - femoral artery
arterial supply: from descending aorta deeper structures
descending aorta - internal iliac a - pelvic/perineal structures/ obturator a, superior and inferior gluteal arteries
arterial supply: from femoral artery anterior side
femoral a
- profunda femoris a
- popliteal a - ant tibial artery - dorsalis pedis a - tarsal/ arcuate/ 1st dorsal metatarsal a - deep plantar arch
arterial supply: from femoral artery post side
femoral artery
- profundis femoris artery
- popliteal a - post tibial a - circumflex fibular a/ peroneal (fibular) a - lateral plantar a (- deep plantar arch - digital branch) / medial plantar a (- 4 plantar metatarsal a)
major branches: femoral artery (5)
- profunda femoris
- superficial epigastric
- superficial circumflex iliac a
- superficial external pudendal a
- deep external pudendal a
