  • administer antiemetic meds as ordered
  • assess response to pain meds to determine if that is the cause
  • maintain patency of NG tube to prevent accumulation of gastric secretions
  • assess BS and abdominal distension to determine return of peristalsis
  • keep patient on NPO status until orders for postop diet received
  • limit unpleasant smells, sights, and stimuli
