Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses Flashcards
anterior portion of the nasal cavity
Nasal vestibule
Posterior portion of the nasal cavity
Choanae
Divides the nasal cavities
septum
Floor of the nasal cavity
Palatine process of the maxilla and horizonal plate of the palatine bone
Roof of the nasal cavity
Cribriform plate (middle), nasal spine (anterior), nasal bone (anterior), body of sphenoid bone (posterior)
Medial wall of nasal cavity
Perpendicular plate of ethmoid (superior), vomer (posterior), nasal crests of maxilla/palatine bones, nasal spine, vomeronasal cartilage (anterior)
Lateral wall of nasal cavity
Inferior/middle/superior turbinates
What bone are the middle and superior turbinates part of?
Ethmoid
What is a turbinate called when covered in mucosa?
Conchae
Elevated portion of the lateral wall that surrounds/separates each conchae
Meatus
Space between the superior conchae and the lateral wall
Sphenoethmoidal recess
What does the inferior meatus contain?
nasolacrimal duct (anterior portion)
What does the middle meatus contain?
Middle ethmoidal air cells (make up ethmoidal bulla), semilunar hiatus, frontal sinus drainage, maxillary sinus
What does the superior meatus contain?
Posterior ethmoidal air cells,sphenopalatine foramen
What opens into the sphenoethmoidal recess?
Sphenoid sinus
