Myasthenia Gravis Flashcards
What is the epidemiology for myasthenia gravis
Occurs in dogs, cats and humans. Generally happens between 2-4 and 9-13yrs old.
What breeds are predisposed to myasthenia gravis
Jack Russell, springer spaniel or dachunds
Which breeds is the acquired myasthenia gravis more popular in
Akitas, chihuahuas, terrier
What causes the congential form of myasthenia gravis
Mutation in genes coding for acetylcholine receptors.
What causes myasthenia gravis in the acquired form
Autoimmune disorder where the presence of antibodies against acetylcholine are present in the circulation
What are the three subtypes of the acquired form of myasthenia gravis
Generalized fulminating form
Focal fulminating form
Acute fulminating form.
Describe how myasthenia gravis affects the muscles
Antibodies against acetylcholine block the muscle cells neurotransmitter receptors so the muscle cell does not detect the acetylcholine. There is no muscle contraction
What is the chief complaint with myasthenia gravis
Generalized weakness in limbs with or without dysphagia.
What are some tests to detect myasthenia gravis
Cbc
Biochem
Urinalysis
Rads
How do you diagnose the acquired form of myasthenia gravis
Acetylcholine receptor antibody testing
How do you diagnose the congenital form of myasthenia gravis
Muscle biopsy
How do you treat myasthenia gravis
Immunosuppression
supportive care
What drugs are never to be given when treating for myasthenia gravis
Ampicillin
Aminoglycosides
Phenothiazine
What is the prognosis for myasthenia gravis
Months to years of affected life. Congenital form is worse.
What is myasthenia gravis
Autoimmune disease causing weakness of skeletal muscles in the body. Can either be congenital neuromuscular disorder or an acquired neuromuscular disorder.
