muscular Flashcards
what are the 4 main characteristics of muscle
excitability- the speed it responds to stimulus, contractibility- speed it contracts when stimulated, extensibility- the length it can stretch to, elasticity- the speed the muscle can return to original size
what is the origin of a muscle
this is the end of the muscle attached to a structure that remains stationary during contraction
what is the insertion of a muscle
this is the opposite end of the muscle that moves during contraction allowing movement
during contraction the insertion move towards the origin : true or false
true
where are tendons found
they are at either end of a muscle allowing it to attach to bone
at is the belly of a muscle
this is the fleshy middle part of the muscle that contracts
what is an agonist and antagonist muscle
agonist- prime mover that contracts causing action antagonist- stretches and yields movement
name an example of an antagonistic muscle pair
tricep and bicep, during Bicep curl up: bicep- agonist and tricep- antagonist
working inwards name the 6 gross structures of muscle
epimysium, perimysium, fascicle, endomysium, muscle fibre cell, myofibrils
structure and function of epimysium
dense irregular connective tissue, surrounds whole outer-surface of muscle
structures and functions of perimysium
dense irregular connective tissue, very rich blood supply (good waste removal and energy source), surrounds fascicles
what are fascicles
bundles of muscle fibres
structure and function of endomysium
thin connective tissue, surrounds individual muscle fibre
what is a muscle fibre cell
a skeletal muscle cell
structure and function of myofibrils
made of actin and myosin, causes striation in muscle and the reason for muscle contraction
