Muscles of the Thorax Flashcards
What are the two phases of breathing?
Inhalation: thoracic cavity increases in size
Exhalation: thoracic cavity decreases in size
Muscles of the thorax that assist in breathing act primarily during what type of breathing?
relaxed quiet breathing
How do the ribs move during inhalation/exhalation
move up during inhalation
move down during exhalation
The muscles of the thorax include:
Diaphragm
External Intercostal
Internal Intercostal
What does the diaphragm look like?
dome shaped muscle with superior convex surface
What are the two portions of the diaphragm
Peripheral muscular portion
central tendon
What are the three openings of the diaphragm?
aortic hiatus
esophageal hiatus
caval opening
What is the aortic hiatus of the diaphragm for?
arota,
thoracic duct,
azygos veins
What is the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm for?
esophagus
vagus nerves
What is the caval opening of the diaphragm for?
foramen for inferior vena cava
What is the origin of the diaphragm?
xiphoid process
costal cartilages of rib 7-12
lumbar vertebrae and discs
What is the insertion of the diaphragm?
central tendon
What is the innervation of the diaphragm?
phrenic nerve
What muscle exerts 75% of the effort for relaxed quiet breathing?
diaphragm
Does the diaphragm help return blood to the heart?
yes
Together with the anterolateral abdominal muscles the diaphragm helps increase the intaabdominal pressure for:
- helping the support of spine when weight lifting
- evacuation of contents in the organs:defecation, urination, childbirth
How many pairs of intercostal muscles are there?
eleven
What are the three layers of the intercostal muscles?
external, internal, innermost
What layer of the intercostal muscles does the external intercostals occupy?
superficial layer
What direction does the fibres of the external intercostals run?
obliquely, inferiorly, anteriorly and medially (same direction as external oblique)
What is the origin of the external intercostals??
inferior border of the rib above
What is the insertion of the external intercostals?
superior border of the rib below
What are the actions of the external intercostals?
elevates ribs, relaxation allows the ribs to descend by gravity
What muscle exerts 25% of the muscle effort in relaxed quiet breathing?
external intercostals
What is the innervation of the external intercostals?
thoracic spinal nerves of T2-T12
What layer of the intercostal muscles does the internal intercostals occupy?
intermediate layer
In what direction do the fibres of the internal intercostals run?
superiorly, anteriorly, and medially ( same direction as internal obliques)
What is the origin of the internal intercostals?
superior border of rib below
What is the insertion of the internal intercostals
inferior border of the rib above
What is the innervation of the internal intercostals
thoracic spinal nerves T2-T12
