If one side contracts, head and neck bend to same side; if both contract the head will flex at the neck and extend at the junction between the neck and skull

Hypoglossus
Simultaneously elevates and widens the pharynx
Styloglossus
Simultaneously elevates and widens the pharynx
Stylopharyngeus
Elevates the base of the tongue and depresses soft palate (separates oral cavity from pharynx)
Palatoglossus
moves palate posterioinferiorly and pharynx anterosuperiorly
Palatopharyngeus
Raises the soft palate and helps bring it into contact with posterior pharyngeal wall to close off nasopharyx during speech and swallowing
